Sorry guys.

By chance, are you running a Dell PC? (Or any PC that has a genuine Intel motherboard?) Let us know what hardware you're using (brand of PC and any other info you can supply).

If you move the mouse or hit a key, does the black screen with flashing bars disappear and restore your desktop, or are you stuck at that screen?

If stuck at the flashing screen, the 1st thing to try is [CTRL]+[ALT]+[BACKSPACE] to restart the Xserver. If that fails, hold the *left* [CTRL]+[ALT] keys down, press and release the [Print Screen / SysRq] key followed up by pressing and releasing the [B] key (reboots system).

More info, Derek, and we can help you.

Given that I am new to the entire Linux thing, (and so used to the
Windows atmosphere) I am having slight problems with my O.S.

First of all, whenever it idles for a little bit, my screen goes black
and starts flashing multi-colored bars. I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed
on two desktop computers, and same story for both of them. It seems to
be a problem with the Screen saver, because when I tried to edit the
screen saver to switch it off, the black screen and multi colored bars
came up again. Also, if I have been using this O.S. for over an hour
straight, the same story.

Thanks!
