I dont have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04. I have more than 10 applications open all the time, 8 hours a day, for my regular work. And I'm even using Gnome-Shell.
Mine's running on a commodity laptop - Lenovo B450, Core2Duo T6750, 320GB HDD, 2GB RAM.
