Evidently you missed the whole "Church of Scientology" thing. Few
years back, some actor I forgot the name of converted to this church
and various Internet message boards declared war. I'm still not clear
how an Internet message board can go to war, but for a while there was
all of this anti-Scientology propaganda circulating the Internet. It
was one of those Internet memes which goes in one week and out the
other.

<hat id="admin">

The trick is that these kinds of memes are off-topic. On many message
boards, they have a kind of "kitchen-sink" area where anything goes.
We don't. This entire group is supposed to be 100% on-topic (or very
close to that).

The other reason I reacted such is that I've seen a lot of specialized
communities (similar ours, in that they're all there to talk about
something specific) basically destroyed by religious "discussion." It
always starts innocently enough. Someone uses some kind of
religiously-charged comment. Someone else attempts to refute that
comment in passing. Someone attempts to refute the refutation. This
continues until the original topic is long-lost and it's just a
pissing match to see who can scream until their face turns blue (this
is widely accepted to mean that the "debate" is over.)

During this time, the original reason everyone was reading this thread
is lost. Most people don't care about religious differences in these
technical group, so it taxes their patience. It ultimately damages
the community. Additionally, every time such a flame-war happens, the
likelihood for another flame-war to erupt increases (roughly
exponentially).

Put plainly, I have zero-tolerance for any kind of religious flame-war
in this group. Here we discuss GNU/Linux. In the event that someone
decides to start a religious flame-war, there will be bans.

I know that you, "Dos-Man 64," didn't intend to start a war. I think
it's neat that you made a text drop shadow using your program. But
I'm still giving a warning: religiously-charged comments are taboo.
They start things we don't want to have to deal with. For that
matter, politically- and racially- charged comments are taboo as well.
It just opens an off-topic can of worms that many people feel very
passionately about. Things get out of hand too easily, and I think we
all would rather have none of that here.

So, in the interest of ensuring that this group stays happy and
on-topic, I just want to stick my foot down and say "hey man, that can
start stuff that is bad." So now you know, and we can continue on our
merry way. Again, I'm not angry, you're not in trouble. I've just
seen other communities damaged by this kind of nonsense, and I want to
stop it before it starts. Call me paranoid, but that's where it's at.

So to recap:

o Please avoid racially, politically, or religiously charged comments.
o From time to time, these things happen. It's OK. Ignore it. Do not react.
o If you react in a way to a R/P/R -comment that is aggressive or
could start a flame war, you will be banned.

Cool embossing effect by the way. It could be just me, but I think
the right eye on the LGM face is a little wonky. :)
