Almost all major distributions have tools to allow dual booting. Since most
distros can be run as dual boot or virtual machines, it might be worthwhile
deciding on which distribution appeals to you the most, and then searching the
web for instructions for that particular distribution, using the installation
tools it provides. If you want to run Linux from *within* Windows, there are
fewer options, but still a number of them, as Laura pointed out.

But, if it wuz me, I'd do it in this order:

1) Look over the major distros and see which one fits my fancy
2) Search the web to see if it installs nicely on my hardware (most
major distros are pretty robust here, but a few still have a few problems,
particularly with Radeon graphics cards.) 3) Once I've found a couple of choices, search the web to look for
installation issues for those particular distros.
