I had a problem with getty respawning..

The main reason is an error in inittab.

I had the problem because I mounted / with the 'user'
option in fstab.

My friend had the problem because of a badly
configured Xorg.conf. This happened when the system
tried to boot into runlevel 5, but would fail to do
so, causing getty to respawn. So basically, its down
to inittab.
