Sound and CentOS: CentOS is frustrating... its a bad luck of CentOS that i saw this psot today. In my case it detects the Sound card correctly.. but never plays the sound.. even after updating the kernel and alsa libs and many things.. Bekaar os.. Both.. RHEL 4 update3 and CentOS 4.3 (clones of each other) are hopeless... I will learn Debian and work my ass out if anything needs configuration but i am assured that Debian once set is a strong OS.
Of the redhat stable (not meaning stability) only Fedora is exceptional.. the community has done gr8 job keeping it up. I had installed FC3 (desktop sys)and tweaked it with kernel compilation, Xine & mplayer, Amarok, etc. etc.. I quit the job 1 and half yrs ago and yesterday my boss called to say that my machine is still running fine when all other (windows) have crashed 'n' number of times! Even at my home i have 2 yrs old FC4 system running really fine.. when Centos has given me trouble in less than 2 months.! Its no more redhat for my system.. but sadly thats the field i am working on.. and i need it! ----------------- Ok. on mplayer.. well, guys u need to go thru the installation instructions well. If i am not wrong, then mplayer's main binary throws dependencies of fonts.. the font package is available at mplayerhq.hu install the dependent packages first and then configure mplayer with '--enable-gui' switch OR rpm package will take care on its own. If dont have fonts skins etc.. installed prior to installing mplayer binary, then only the text mode mplayer is installed. To use mplayer from text mode: boot in to init5 and run the following command in terminal window: mplayer /<path> Note: wma, wmv etc are not supported.. download windows media package for the support. If you have configured with --enable-gui option then use the following command: gmplayer /<path> Also check out other media player.. VLC (video LAN Client) really good one.. available for windows os also Xine ---> i liked this one.. the fast fwd option works like fwd option in the old VCR Tape players.. continuous.. which means it reads finer frames.. perhaps! Xine is available at freshrpms.net tc ~ anup --- In [email protected], "Nishit Shah" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > My case is exactly the opposite.
