I too experienced some what similar problem, but in my case server didn't hung but load average shoot up like anything and server starts to respond slow & i need to restart server. In this scenario I observed, at this time my sever CPU utilization was too high & memory utilization is no much change. I guessed that the CPU's ALU is under load but not mommy. So I told my development team to recheck the SQL Queries, Finlay they found one flow for data validation which triggers one of the query to go on a loop. So what I suggest you also find out which SQL query was running at the time server hung and do those query had proper parameter & values.
