On this I respectfully disagree. It may be beneficial to actively know what serial is on the tablet, but as long as some of the configuration is manual, being able to access the last known serial/type without having to keep the pen on the tablet while issue the xsetwacom command on my keyboard is also sort of important I don't have 3 hands and the pens, with the exception of airbrush tend to just roll off when left on their own.
