There should be a line like this in your log file. This will be at
location were X first detects your tablet is plugged in (probably at
startup for your serial tablet).

Wacom Bamboo 2FG 4x5 Pen stylus: Wacom USB Bamboo tablet maxX=14720
maxY=9200 maxZ=1023 resX=100000 resY=100000  tilt=disabled

Is a similar line showing up but without maxZ?

Wacom Bamboo 2FG 4x5 Finger touch: top X=0 top Y=0 bottom X=15360
bottom Y=10240 resol X=2540 resol Y=2540

If so then the xf86-input-wacom doesn't think you have a pen on your tablet.
