Here is some info on your 1st two questions.

There should be no need to update wcmValidateDevice.c.  Tracking USB ID's
in X  input driver was a temporary work around for time period when kernel
drivers were not able to publish enough information about their
capabilities.  For these multi-touch Bamboo's, the kernel driver publishes
all needed info.

The need to touch any user-land USB files or X config files is kinda a
distro specific question.  In recent Fedora releases, I can plug in a
previously unknown USB Bamboo device and xf86-input-wacom will readily use
it with no manual configuration... as long as Kernel driver exists for it.

Some distro's will not create the /dev/input items correctly if it doesn't
have a USB id listed in a config file.  Maybe your running into that.
