You don't say what tablet you have, but if you have one that has buttons, 
expresskeys (http://hem.bredband.net/devel/wacom/) will let you bind one of 
them to switching between the two modes.

(I know you've come to a conclusion already but I thought it was worth adding 
my 2 cents.  I use xsetwacom too, it's good for adding to wrapper scripts for 
applications where you want to switch to relative mode on startup and back to 
absolute on quit)
