It's not my responsibility to purchase computing equipment or software
for other people, or show them how to install it/use it.  That is each
individual user's responsibility, and I feel that the best approach is
for me to avoid trying to relieve them of it.

I am forcing *nothing* on them; that seems not only pointless, but futile.

I am simply running the mailing lists under my control the way that I see
fit -- for a myriad of technical and social reasons, some described here --
and users are free to join or leave as they see fit.  Those who choose
to join are expected to have adequately educated themselves and adequately
provisioned themselves to cope with the consequences of that decision.
As you might, from time to time, people who join *don't* do either
one of those things.  This Is Not My Problem.
