I wouldn't pay a whole lot of attention to Alan's anti-MAPS rants. Every
verifiable claim he makes that I have checked out is untrue, to the
extent that I don't bother any more.
In particular, his claims that above.net is "poisoning" routing information
of third parties is nonsense. They have blackholed ORBS within the above.net
network and its customers due to ORBS' persistently sending large amounts of
unwanted mail despite specific requests that he stop, but the blackhole only
applies to above.net and its customers. I have the details for anyone who
cares.
His claim that MAPS is going to make all their services for-pay only is
equally untrue, It's true that MAPS, which until now has been funded entirely
out of Paul Vixie and Dave Rand's pockets, is adding new paid services to
make it self supporting, but the existing free DNS access to the RBL, RSS,
and DUL will stay free.
ORBS could be a very useful service if it were run responsibly. Too bad that
Alan will not or cannot do so.
