My sister and I have fooled around with sort of a hybrid between e-mail and web boards, in which e-mail messages would have links or buttons like "stop sending me this thread" or "do send me this thread", with a default to send the first two or three messages of each thread. The main problem is that the only practical way I can see to do this is with HTML e-mail which is so dangerous and buggy that I wouldn't want to inflict it on anyone.
