First of CFMAIL has a history of buginess. Additionally, each cfmail request requires CF to talk to your SMTP server. It's far quicker to get around the middleman and let SMTP do things. Remember that your mail server should be designed for massive mailing, so let it do what it does best, as opposed to letting CF manage something that it can handle on its own.
