Steve, I would start by looking at the Performance Monitor in NT to see what the CF service is doing and what is happening and what thresholds are going up, and then the CF log and the NT event log for any errors that may have contributed to those thresholds being reached.
Normally getting errors like this without something being logged to the application or server log is uncommon.
