I would love to see some architectural examples for your upcoming presentation. Do
you know of any books available for CFMX that focus on CFCs?

I think CFC's are a bit of paradigm shift for CF developers. CFC are
really designed for three-tier development. I'd put logic in your
CFC's, which then return data back to CFM pages, which perform the
output. Most CF developers are used to 2 tier, mixing your logic and
your display.

Probably a classic example would be a shopping cart. You return
recordsets that you use to output your catalog; you'd have methods for
adding, deleting, etc, products from the cart. All of this happens
independent of the display.

(I'm going to be doing part 2 of my CFC/Web Services presentation,
covering advanced cfc usage. Perhaps it would be make architectural
examples a focus?)

I've only played around with CFMX. Mostly testing out the XML
capability. CFMX makes working with XML a lot easier than before,
however, I have not seen, stumbled across, or found any way to interact
with node elements' properties and methods like you can working with
MSXML DOM. This is a critical aspect of working with any XML document
in my opinion. CFMX makes creating and spitting out content from an
XML doc a breeze. Does anyone know how to access a node's parent node
via the parentNode property for instance? Does anyone know if DWMX will
be modified to meet the user's expectations? In other words, is
Macromedia listening to the disgruntled development community? I have
not talked with one developer yet that likes DWMX.

Does CFC live up to the hype? I've heard/read that CFCs should not
return display data. But beyond the authentication aspect for a user,
I'm only seeing scenarios where I want to use CFCs to return content for
display purposes. What are the best practices for using CFCs in your
development?

Thanks

Tom

DITTO, DITTO, DITTO!!! What a useless piece of software. There is a
reason
that I have never chosen to use DW up to this point, (the same reason I
don't use Front Page.) All of the things that make Studio a cool little
IDE
are gone or at least changed negatively in DWMX. Studio is a text editor
that allows quick access to files, tags and functions and very
easy-to-use
keyboard shortcuts... DWMX is a crappy WYSIWYG editor that claims to
support
CF, but from which the above features have been removed (or have at
least
been greatly diluted.)

I'd also like to add that I'm none too impressed with CFMX as an
application
server so far either. All of my apps using COM are completely dead
except
for one, which is VERY, VERY slow now. I'm moving the bulk of my
organizations apps over which I have power to .NET because I think MX is
that big of a step backwards. I think we all saw this coming when MM
bought
Allaire. I've done my last three projects with CF and ASP.NET in
parallel
(with C#) and all three run more efficiently and more smoothly in .NET.

I too am dismayed at how crappy Dreamweaver MX is. How can they take
away all the shortcuts? Does anyone know if Studio 5 can be extended to
work with CFC and CFXML? Are there any other features of CFMX that you
would need to extend CF Studio with?

Finding hacked and cracked versions of all my favorite software.

Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that Dreamweaver MX is going to
be better for me than CF Studio 5.

The other day I got a dialog box in DWMX that said "Cancelling..." with
a progress bar and a button that said "Cancel." I could not cancel the
cancel.

I've gotta run

I'm mostly a Flash and Director guy and have been for a long time. I
attended that MX Studio seminar recently and was very impressed by the
apparent power and ease of use of StudioMX. I attended a DFWCFUG meeting
and found it, (and this list), to be filled with very knowledgeable and
unusually helpful people.

So I'd like to ask what, specifically, is giving everyone the biggest
challenges with moving to StudioMX? And is it an interface and
integration issue from previous versions of the individual software
apps? Or is the whole MX thing still a bit buggy? Or is it something
else?
