OT Roaming Wireless LAN

I'm trying to set up a mobile wireless network, such that a group of scientists can take a command unit (van) out into the field and set up. The scientists would take their iPaqs out from the van and gather data from various air monitoring stations and wells. They would be tied to the server in the van running CF and ArcIMS. My real problem is, and I know it's not really CF related, I need to figure out what solution is going to be best for giving me good range...
