So have I, but I've spoken with them and they are most definitely made for fixed point to point access and will not work with mobile or omni-directional setups.

Should be able to find wireless access points with a much better range than 1000ft.

Here's one with a range of 15 miles...

(not an endorsement, though I have heard good things about Orinoco)

You can buy antennas to significantly boost the range of many "outdoor routers" as well..  It all kind of depends what price range you're in..

I can't seem to find anything on 2.4 with a range of over 1000 ft. I'm trying to find better.

Ken,

Look into 802.11b  or "wi-fi" for wireless networks with a fairly good range.

Subject: OT Roaming Wireless LAN

I'm trying to set up a mobile wireless network, such that a group of scientists can take a command unit (van) out into the field and set up. The scientists would take their iPaqs out from the van and gather data from various air monitoring stations and wells. They would be tied to the server in the van running CF and ArcIMS. My real problem is, and I know it's not really CF related, I need to figure out what solution is going to be best for giving me good range... If anyone's got any good suggestions I would appreciate it. Also, if this would be better as an offline discussion, feel free to email me directly instead.

Thanks,
