Personally I think the "Discovering CFCs" book is great. It's short and to the point, and is a great introduction to OO programming concepts in addition to being a great resource for learning CFCs. I hope they update this book to reflect the changes in MX 6.1 because there are a couple of workarounds in the book that are no longer necessary. Overall a great book.

As for best practices stuff, I was very pleasantly surprised by Ray Camden's "ColdFusion MX Developer's Handbook." They forego the usual "here's what the web is and how it works" chapters in this book and the first chapter deals specifically with planning and architecting a ColdFusion application. Hopefully more books will take the lead and have something like this as their first chapter as well. I just wish there was more of this kind of discussion in this book, but overall this is a nice reference to have on the shelf in my opinion.

By far the best book I've read on best practices in CF, however, is "Dynamic Publishing with ColdFusion MX" by Benjamin Elmore and others. This book deals specifically with creating a dynamic publishing system in ColdFusion, but there are several chapters that deal with this type of application in the context of architecture and good coding practices, so it's a great read from a best practices standpoint even if you aren't designing a dynamic publishing system.

If you're just looking for general, language-neutral programming books, the one I recommend time and again is "The Pragmatic Programmer" by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas. This book is packed with advice and concepts that will help you become a better programmer in any language.

Hope that gives you some ideas,
Matt

All,

I was going to pick up a few new CF books off amazon, and am curious if you have any thoughts on these:

- SQL Queries for mere mortals (Michael Hernandez)

- SQL in a Nutshell (Kevin Kline)

- Hack Proofing CF (Steve Casco)

- Discovering Fusebox 3 w/ CF (Hal Helms)

- Optimizing CF 5 (Chris Cortes)

- Discovering CFCs (Hal Helms)

Bought them? Like them?

I'm also interested in a good intermediate skill level "best practices"
book. Something that talks about when do certain things, or tips and
tricks. the stuff that standard CF Bible type books never seem to cover.

Thanks!

Jake
