So the question is though (and this is where I don't know enough about ASP)... can't a person just comment out the call to the COM object and defeat this mechanism?

Without looking at the code, he probably has COM object that does this... Alot ASP apps use objects to do this sort of thing...

I've been trying to figure out something for months - I downloaded the ASP based Web Wiz Forums (very nice, by the way). They have a free version that has branding locked into the look and feel. To remove this, you purchase a licensed version and then input the serial number in the admin.
Granted, I'm not at ALL an asp guy, but I can't seem to figure out how he's coded this so that I can't just comment out some lines of code and simply remove that requirement on the front page templates.
Does anyone have any idea how I could do something like this in CF? I don't want to encrypt my application, FYI.
