I would just like to remind everyone that if we do come up with a specific recommendation and a path to go forward, epic is licensed under (pretty much) the bsd license and including GPL code in epic would require (according to FSF dogma) switching the licensing of EPIC binaries to GPL which is legally iffy because EPIC is an "unblessed" derivative work of ircII so I've not got the ability to change the license terms like that.
