Hmmm....there are quite a few real-worl corollaries to consider. Perhaps the best I can think of right now is the evolution of Modern Homo sapiens and the displacement of Neanderthals/Archaic humans...allow me a bit of background: Archaic Humans (Cold-adapted ones in Europe were coined "Neanderthals") had spread over most of the Europe, Africa and Asia by 60,000 years ago (surely even earlier than this but we can go with an un-ambiguous later date for this example...) They were pretty successful hunters and gatherers, wore clothes, constructed shelters, used fire, coooperatively hunted and had developed the most advanced tool technology the world had yet seen (Broadly called "Mousterian" culture.) However somewhere around 100,000 to 150,000 years ago populations of humans in Southern and East Africa went through further biological and cultural changes, they grew more gracile (less robust and less massive than the average neanderthal...) and began to rapidly expand upon the current tool culture. They were using more bone, and the stone tools they created were thinner, lighter, sharper and definitely more efficient. At this point, the world is filled with Archaic humans and these few advanced populations of Modern humans are expanding out of Africa. We know the end to this story, for Modern humans like us have populated the whole world...but what happened to the archaic humans in the interim... Some researchers believe the Archaic humans simply outcompeted and replaced entirely all the archaic populations. Ultimately Modern humans were more EFFICIENT at hunting and gathering, had better technology, had rapidly evolving culture....so over time did they push the archaic humans to fringe areas where they eventually died off? By 30,000 years ago this seems to be the case, but even some Archaic humans sites then show some real advanced tools starting to be made (Chatelperronian culture..) almost as if they were copying he Soultrean culture and other Upper Paleolithic technologies? The other possibility is that the populations interbred and eventually were genetically homogenous with one and other. In every recorded instance in history where a more advanced population or culture came into contact with another less advanced culture, the more advanced culture overwhelms the less advanced one, and interbreeding is widespread. One thing is for sure, Neanderthals shared food, took care of the ill and infirm, buried their dead with funerary cermonies and pushed human technology to new limits. No matter their fate, to call them anything other than human is wrong. Physically they could blend with us seamlessy today and you'd never recognize a difference.
