Then I went and check all the references I can find: MAHQ, MS
encyclopedia 2ed (~1998?) and 0079 (TV) Roman Album. Nope, nowhere
could I find a lineart that says this is how Dom look like and that
is how a Rick Dom look (specificially the longer pointy skirt). In
fact, everywhere I found a pic of Rick Dom, it's exactly the same pic
used for Dom. Example:

As with so many other things, it doesn't appear that there was a
difference between the two models until 0080 came out. There was
an earlier example in the MSV lineart, with the Desert and Prototype
Doms being shown not having a skirt at all. But the lineart of 0080
appears to be the first lineart that shows the real difference between
the Rick Dom and the regular Dom.

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't for 0080 the Dom is a Rick Dom II? it'd be consider a whole new model like GM Cannon vs. GM Cannon II. IIRC there's no plain Rick Dom shown in 0080.

Again I agree for the difference between RIck Dom & Dom is surely not visual, there's no change in the lineart in the original 0079 production. But I's saying the difference was not from the MG model but much earlier.

As for Core's objection that in the Gundam franchise the designers are more than willing to re-design a MS, my counter-example is... we had an upgraded RX-78-2 but we didn't have a new lineart design neither... even not a color change.

My theory is that, back in 1979 there's simply no need on animation details (or animation science details) to specify a MS model to be space/land/marine use, and the difference is only made when the story need a new MS design. And as the end of the 0079 TV series was cut and partly extended to 44 eps, there's no time & budget for Sunrise to add anything so minor... they only need to add extra nozzle for the Doms to make it space use, just as speeding up the animation to show the effect of magnetic coating. No one minded back then.

Additionally, as we've heard about the "rumor" (is it rumor or is it a fact?) that if the OYW story actually got its 50+ full run, the story actually go a bit further and have the Gundam upgraded... that part of story was then expanded to the unproduced MS-X line. And as that was cut also hence RX-78-2 only get a magnetic coating upgrade (instead of turning into the MS-X Heavy Gundam, or something like that).

Anyway, yeah, the Rick Dom/Dom naming difference would probably be an afterthought (but not MG line late), and the longer skirt armor is for sure much later.
