Yeah, a lot of it has to do with where you live.  Here in LA County, two car 
lengths is probably pushing the limits of my tolerance.  But the three lengths 
that I'd probably find acceptable isn't necessarily much better.

On the other hand, that's really the only option.  You can't reasonably expect 
to maintain much more distance than that, and even with that amount you'll 
still have people moving into your lane constantly - meaning that you once 
again have to adjust your distance.  You're never going to manage to maintain a 
'safe' distance for any length of time.

And then there's the idiots that travel about 15 mph faster than everyone else, 
and are changing lanes constantly, weaving dangerously close to other cars in 
an effort to switch lanes so that they don't have to slow down.  It's a wonder 
that I haven't seen any accidents caused by drivers like that, though I've seen 
some awfully close calls.
