I seem to remember reading somewhere that when the Zakus first came
out, the Feds deployed Balls (or a primitive variant of Balls) along
with the Saberfish and Guntanks. None of them were really effective.
As for the GM, the GM we see in 08MST is a prototype GM, the GM type E
(I think it's E). Plus we have to assume that there's a lot going on
besides just the Gundam and the White Base. GMs likely went through a
lot of testing before a final version came out.
