Really??? Does anyone have experience playing it off Win2K/XP on 1+
GHz machine?
It would probably run. Though it may not stand up all that well. I mostly
had fun with it playing multiplayer with it's larger than life weapons.
Right right, the pacing is different, but the point of MW is that it's
in-cockpit (mechaspeak for first-person) rather than 3rd person. It
may sound trivial but the result is that you won't have full rotation
under 0.1sec and even twisting and turning 360/720/1080 in under 1
sec.
Indeed. MW also seemd more "tactical". It wasn't a twitch shooter in any
way and even in the "Fast" ligh mechs, was more of a thinking man's game.
Sniping Atlas' and Daishi's with twin laight gauss rifles in a Thor ...
ahh, good times.
Also in MW you win by piloting mechs to limits of the physics engine,
for FvZ line of games, you can (iirc) pretty much win the game by a
super-simple formula: wait for bad guys to shoot, dash and immediately
shoot back, rinse and repeat.
That was always my issue with all of the action-y Gundam games. It never
really feels very fluid and natural, and feels more like you're playing
the game engine than actually piloting a giant robot.
Not sure what's the VO twin stick control, but thanks to the list's
recommendation, I had a lot of fun with Robot Alchemic Drive, which
uses twin sticks for upper limbs, shoulder buttons for lower limbs.
The Twin Sticks were kind of ahead of their time. I think they were even
released for the Dreamcast version. Now, i suppose, the dual analong
sticks on the PS2 or Xbox controllers should in theory be similar, but
it's just much less satisfying than two big joysticks.
Ahh yes Freespace 2 was a lot of fun. I wonder if melee is the shop
stopper for space robot games. Everyone is flying in a space at at
least 200 kph (again using ground speed published on MAHQ) and trying
to hit each other with a weapon range of about 0.01km?
Speaking of Freespace, I've found out that the source code was released,
and people have been expanding it, improving the graphics, textures, and
models, and creating mods (including a Battlestar Galactica mod). It
really was the height of space sims.
Agreed on melee in space. Everything I've played, even going back to the
CCA game on PSX, just doesn't work when it comes to space levels and melee
weapons. Auto targetting works okay for ranged weapons, and is at least
somewhat believable (targetting computer), but holding down your
boost/dash button and hoping to colide with another robot doing the
same...
