They may be in god mode in some missions, but that isn't always the case.  
iirc, in the White Base version of the Garma mission I almost killed Char.  I 
think I wore his health down until it was very low, and then got the little 
voice over as Char betrays Garma that indicated the mission was over.  i.e. you 
can't kill him, but you can hurt him pretty badly and it amounts to the same 
thing as far as mission completion goes.  And I vaguely remember a mission 
against Ramba Ral in the Gouf that had him taking damage when hit - just not 
very much.  And then he quit shooting at other people, and killed me almost 
instantly.

In any event, while the two I mentioned might not have been invulnerable, they 
were close enough to it that it nearly didn't matter.
