I think they downgraded the Altiesen and Weisritter somewhat. Plus, the units you're fighting at the game tend to be more powerful than the stuff you fought early in OG1. So the overall effect is that Kyousuke and Excellen don't come across as quite so strong.
But the enemy isn't THAT much more powerful at the start. Lamia's Angelg is practically god-mode in many of the early fights, and is a very nice unit even later in the game.
There's a much larger mix of mission types in the second game. In the first game, nearly all of the missions were of the 'kill everything on the map' type. Most of the missions in the second game are of the same type, but there's also a lot more missions that involve keeping the enemy out of a certain area, or getting units to a certain location. I've also had a lot of missions that start out with just a few pilots on the map, with the rest arriving after certain conditions have been met.

In addition to the hugely improved animation, I'd point out that the mecha art is better than it was first time around. I'm only on the 6th mission or so but it's all so much crisper. Very nice. The music is also much more lively than before.
I am missing my upgraded robots though - Excellen isn't tearing everything apart with just her three-beam cannon and Kyosuke isn't punching holes in the moon with his Revolver Stake. Must play more!
