In all honesty, SD Gundam Force isn't that far removed from the series that
came before it. The most American centric elements are the series being
referenced (and even then they snuck in some sly references to things like
Turn A) and the character of Bellwood. The characters, settings and overall
tone of the show are all consistent with previous SD Gundam works. The show
itself even got fairly darker in the second half, with plots covering
romantic betrayal and patricide.
It just shows that most of the people criticising SDGF don't know their
facts and are giving a knee jerk reaction because they want Gundam to be
seen as 'mature' and edgy. The series definetly had it's faults, but do we
really need to name it the black sheep?

There's a huge difference between the Superior Defender Gundam released for
US markets, and the Super Deformed Gundam that is seen in Japan. While I
haven't seen either one (though I did play the video game based on the
former, and reviewed it on this list), from what I've read the former is a
stand-alone series that is made for kids, while the latter is more of a
parody of Gundam and is thus designed for people who are already familiar
with the various series. I would doubt that Musha SD is based on parodies
of MS and Zeta Gundam, but I bet that it still pokes fun at the various
things that inspired it and does so in a manner that adults can enjoy.

Musha originated as SD, and has obviously been popular enough to justify
continuing it. Since this is so similar, it makes sense to use SD with
this new line as well.
And besides, it's a bit hard to take seriously the idea of mobile suits
modeled after real historical figures. SD fits with that concept better
than "real robots".
