It looks very much like the RX-78-2 to me.  The legs look wrong (they're a bit too rounded and slender, imo), but from the waist up it's a dead ringer for the RX-78-2 (or at least as much of a ringer as it can be that far away from the "camera").  The Exia occured to me as well, but the Exia has some odd stuff near its mid-section and waist.  I'm 99% confident that it's not the Exia.

 

One of the regulars over at the Dream Pod 9 forums mentioned that he's heard that the scene occurs early in the first episode.  But he didn't know anything more than that.

Also, the feminine looking pilot with the purple hair really is a guy, and supposedly there's a backstory explaining why he looks the way he does.
