I think the Gundam that appear in episode 1, when Setsuna is young, is the prototype Gundam the current Gundam are based on. As for the light, I think it depends on the configuration of the "exhaust" - look at Virtue and you can see the way it does the "light" is different than the other Gundams, and I think when Dynames is fighting in the air in episode 2, the way the light flows is very similar to Exia. The way that prototype Gundam is flying seems to be more inline with the OP image of Exia "flying" with wings.
