Re: ICANN Signs Up a Spin Doctor (February 4) by Leander Kahney

It's unfortunate that ICANN, the non-profit corporation corporation charged
with the administration of Internet names and addresses, felt it necessary
to hire a PR agency. A fair measure of criticism against ICANN would
dissipate if its board meetings were opened to the public.

Trust must be earned. No amount of PR spin can mask the fact that ICANN's
board is unwilling to conduct its deliberations before the public eye.
Board members can decide among themselves not to publish their decisions or
their individual votes. They have three weeks to post meeting minutes,
which is a very long time on this high velocity medium.

More than a dozen websites have joined a Grey Ribbon Campaign to bring
ICANN out of the shadows. The grey ribbon gif and a growing list of
supporters are posted at http://www.domainhandbook.com/icannt.htm.

We asked for accountability. Instead, ICANN gave us a smokescreen.
