I don't see that whether a company is For-profit or non-profit really
would make much difference in this sort of situation. This sort of situation
could as easily manifest itself in a non-profit company as it could in
a for-profit company.

Agreed. And this is the crux of the problem. There is no public mechanism
that is effective, to insure oversight.

Yes, agreed, If that SOMETHING LIKE ICANN has public and stakeholder
oversight that is and can be effective, of course. What we are seeing thus far
from the current ICANN doesn't seem to meet that criterion however.....
