CTV's Digital Desk and The Globe and Mail Team Up to Webcast
the CRTC's New Media Ruling

Toronto (May 14, 1999)-- CTV's Digital Desk and
theglobeandmail.com have teamed up to webcast the Canadian
Radio-television Telecommunication Commission's ruling on its role
in regulating the Internet. The CRTC's decision will be released
Monday May 17.

Last fall the Commission, which currently regulates broadcasting
and telecommunications, announced it would be holding public
hearings into "New Media" to determine what is an appropriate role
for government.

The CRTC received over 200 written submissions and a special
website was set up [http://www.newmedia-forum.net ] to record the
views of Canadians. The outcry was loud and the response
substantially reflected a common view held by the industry and
citizens -- Hands Off The Internet.

Significant issues were raised before the commission: What can
be done about pornography, racism and what can be done to make
sure that Canadian producers of New Media content aren't
overwhelmed by American companies.

The CTV and the Globe and Mail joint venture will ensure that all
Canadians with access to a computer can see the press
conference through a special webcast facilitated by BlueZone
Productions of Vancouver.

Following that, a live webchat with CRTC Chair Francoise Bertrand
and Vice-Chair David Colville will start at 4:00 pm ET. A gold-ribbon
panel of Internet developers, activists, and experts will be on hand
to respond to the Commission's decision.

Panelists include Galen Duncan (ITAC); Nick Broadhead, author of
the popular Canadian Internet Handbook series; Adam Froman,
President of Multimediator Strategy Group Inc; and Dr. Liss Jeffrey
of the McLuhan Program at University of Toronto.

The webchat will be moderated by Mark Evans, technology reporter at The
Globe and Mail and assisted by Mark Schneider, host of CTV's Digital Desk
feature on new media.

Both webcast and webchat can be accessed at http://www.globeandmail.com and
