That's cause Eugene was an abrasive lunatic more than any other reason.

When I moved out to the country here and struck up a convwerstaion
with the local (big, and unusually clueful "suns and ciscos"" ISP
here I discovered to  my surprise he was running the eDNS root zone.
He tuend it off when Eugene went to jail. I'd neevr talked to him
before. 

Remember Donald from GTE Federal Systems ? A lot of poeple just
thought it was a good idea to get away from the USG roots.

There really is a strong belief out there that the net should
do this stuff for itself.
