If you want to do this, you will want to be familiar with this technology:

http://ctdb.samba.org/

Using it in conjunction with a cluster file system like GFS2 can give
you a very robust alternative Windows file server cluster option.

<put on his Red Hat... hat>

RHEL6 (which should be launching in a few weeks now) has Samba3 w/ CTDB
support, as well as support for GFS2. If you are interested in getting
a supported and certified software stack to do the replacement, I would
recommend that direction. If you are interested in talking more, I can
get you in touch with a Red Hat sales rep, as well as a solution
architect who can help you discuss the solution in depth.
