Mike, I appreciate the feedback.  The majority of the problem was apparently the JVM.  As you know from our conversation and my config file, it was using the default 1.4.2 that shipped with Ubuntu.  I altered my startup to be:
/usr/share/apps/eclipse/eclipse -vm /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0.06/jre/bin/java
(haven't put my finger on where that is in an ini file yet, but I will change the setting there when I do)

The performance difference was immediate.  Eclipse opened in about 6 seconds as opposed to 15+ with 1.4.2.  And the problem with the processor spiking as I type is now gone.  With 1.4.2, even when I had set the delay to 9999 the problem was still there, but that issue is now gone.

Thanks a lot for the insight.

Mike, that is awesome.  Somehow I have missed that setting before now.  That setting made an immediate difference.

As for the JVM, I did install 1.5 but have not tried altering the JVM that Eclipse uses.  I am still kind of fumbling around and don't want to whack anything.  Would you mind hitting me up offlist  (maybe gaim g-talk [EMAIL PROTECTED])?   I would appreciate some advice on that if you have any that might keep me out of trouble

About joining the team, I think that is awesome.  You are a passionate and energetic dude when it comes to CF and CFEclipse and from the recent tone of Spike's blog postings, it sounds like he needs someone like that on the team.  Plus, we need a local insider. :)

Regarding the stats, it is an HP NC6000 1.6M proc.  I am running Ubuntu 6.06.  Eclipse Version: 3.1.2, CFEclipse 1.2.0.  I am attaching the config file if you are interested in seeing the details.

That bug in the tracker sounds close for sure, but I will have to compare those details on some of the giant files on my company's system tomorrow at work.

As for the enhancements I mentioned, I don't think it is necessary.  9999 is about as good as turning it off and with the CTRL-space option, that really fits my needs.

Thanks for the reply...

Hi Dave,
Two things...

1) If you go into Window -> Preferences -> /CFEclipse/Editor, try setting the "Insight Delay" value to "9999" so at least it takes about 10 seconds for the tag insight to kick in. You can then press ctrl + Space to force it to kick in when you need it.

Also, something I have experienced with Eclipse in Ubuntu before is that Ubuntu by default install the GNU JVM (which despite what many people choose to believe) is far behind in performance and support for the Java language. This can often times cause problems because Eclipse believes it is on a fully supported JVM. So if you can, just double check that you only have the real sun JVM running Eclipse. I highly recommend the latest 1.5 updater release (don't remember the number).

2) You'll be the first person I've told, but about a week ago I joined the CFEclipse dev team and have been submitting patches, adding features, etc. Point being, if you don't mind giving me some more details on the problem you are having I just might be able to help. :-)
As for your improvements, i'll enter it as an enhancement request and see what can be done about having it happen

The main questions I have are:
  • What are your system stats, Eclipse version, etc. (other than the Ubuntu part)?
  • Could this match issue #337 in our bug database?

Thanks,
Mike.

P.S. Great to see someone else here working in Linux! Woooo! :-)

My Ubuntu installation of CFEclipse bogs down with tag insight calls in CFEclipse.  Does anyone know if there is a way to disable it?  It would be *very* cool if you could have it off and enable it with a hot key when you actually need it.  I know that is asking for too much, but disabling it would make me happy for now if anyone knows how.
