I've typically done that sort of thing with hidden form
fields to hold on to what was previously in the search form.
However, if you're submitting the search form, and ColdFusion is
performing the search for you, couldn't you just put all of the user's
criteria into the session scope prior to preforming the search? Then if
they click on your "Modify search" button (or whatever), Cold fusion
could build the search form using those session variables to "pre-fill"
the form with their previous criteria.
No _javascript_ involved (unless I'm missing the point). This doesn't
really work if the user clicks the back button, though.

HI All,
I am guessing either I did not explain myself or It cannot be done.
Anyway here goes.
Requirement: Users search criteria to be maintained such that when the
user requests a second search then the previous search criteria will be
loaded into the search page at onload.
Thus the user then has to only make a few changes to re-execute the
search.
This eliminates the need for the user to completely fill out all of the
whole search page
in order to do a second search.
I thought that storing these parameters in session variables
at the time of submit was the best way.
Any thoughts from anyone?
