I'd recommend picking up that book -- I find it terribly useful.

If you're running Apache, you'll need to use the Apache POI Java classes to generate/ read your Word files -- the HWPF project to be precise. 

Unfortunately the HWPF project isn't production-ready.  For more info -- http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/hwpf/index.html -- also includes links to other sites detailing the format of Word files.
