If you've had experience with this - what's your preferred approach?
Seems to me that I could just make all the DAO's and Gateways remote, but I am not sure if that is the safest approach.
Might it be wiser to design a web services layer to sit between the DAO's and Gateways? If so, should that layer exist for security purposes only, or should it further abstract the data access layer?
