I dont use the server for that and doing that on the client isnt all
that risky. Also, none of the frameworks that are in use do that
either.
There is a timer class now that you can use in Flex to use as a 'time
out' feature. You can then send any 'state' data to the server to
save. Then when they login, you can grab that state data and then
apply it to the application.
I dont use FDS so I cant comment on using that.
