As someone who has been using Ubuntu for.. 3 days, my only advice is to download Automatix after you're done installing/ updating the OS. This great little app will give you a listing of lots of things that either should've come with the OS (but couldn't mostly due to licensing) or just handy to have.

I'm planning to reformat and older laptop into a linux workstation. I've seen a few CFUGgers using Ubuntu, but most of the OS's I deal with are of the RedHat line (RH & CentOS). Other than lack of mp3 support and some unidentified issues w/ yum/RPM updates & installs on the RH side, I have not found any justifiable reason to use one over the other.
