I say it depends..
I have been doing CF since 1997 and now my CF development is delegated
to CFCs used in my Flex apps. the RIA space is exploding (both AJAX
based and player based) so I would recommend that you start learning
one of those now along with CF.
now with AIR, things get real interesting as you can do both AJAX and
Flex apps that run as a desktop app and have local storage via
SQLLite. Personally, i see the player based RIA's ruling over ajax
ones as browser incompatibility goes away and there are much more you
can do with player RIA's.
One thing to keep in mind though if you go the Flex route, event based
development takes a different mindset than request/response
development. You also dont have to worry about state, as flex apps
have state.
good luck, feel free to ask any questions..

Okay I'm pumped and full of questions ...
I have an interest in
1.Finishing both of Ben Forta's Application Construction Kit Books cover to
cover. Currently I'm on the first book and I've only gotten as far as
Chapter 19 of 38 (plus Apendixes). I probably would have finished the first
book by now but about 3 months ago I took a break to learn/master the latest
CSS techniques & relearn JavaScript thanks to all the ajax libraries. Now
that I"m done with that I'm back on the Construction Kit books. However now
there is a myriad of things I want to learn which include.
2.Flex 3
3.Application Frameworks(probably MachII)
4. CFEclipse and Eclipse in General
5. Apollo(now AIR)
6.Flash ActionScript3.0
7. Photoshop Advanced
8.Scorpio.
Problem is.... I don't know what order I should approach to all the books
I've got, but I believe it's safe to say finish up the Application
Construction Books first right? Or should I start on Flex or a framework or
even Eclipse before that? I've mastered Dreamweaver 8.
On top of it all every employer I talk to is wanting someone who wears all
these hats or it seems they won't bring you on or even consider you as a
junior developer w/o at lest the Frameworks and CFexperience.
By the way I am looking for a junior level CF developer position for those
of you posting jobs.. Been doing CF about 1 year + on my own and only about
6 months OTJ experience with CF.
