I haven't seen a hard lock in quite some time. Is this just a standard CARP setup or is there anything special going on like bridging? Were they really locked up? Was the console unresponsive, or perhaps at a debug prompt? Have you eliminated any external factors such as power/environment? Usually if it were some kind of traffic it would do something to the master, cause it to fail, and then a short time later cause the backup to fail. It wouldn't typically hit both of them simultaneously.
