hi joseph,

i use pfsense extensively under vmware and it has worked marvellously --
two instances running in a two different rack servers in a hosting
center.

i would urge you to consider vmware esxi 5.0 (just out recently) -- it
allows the vmware o/s to have a firewall so you can protect the
management interface should you decide to declare it on a public ip
address.

alternatively, you can put the vmware interface on simulated lan
interface (vmware switch) that doesn't use a physical adapter. in that
case, pfsense needs to be running in order to get to the vmware
interface -- i was using openvpn to connect to pfsense, and then once
the tunnel was up, i could connect to vmware. make sure pfsense
autostarts :-)

a remote controller is indispensable in that setup -- the management
interface can be adjusted from the vmware console screen.

oh yea, one other note ...

if you declare/use vlans on pfsense, you need to enable vlans in the
vmware networking management (through vshpere) -- took me a while to
figure that one out ... it wont send giants without being told to.

cheers

m
