Thanks for that hint.  That eliminated the problem with my personal
site, but a client's site is still suffering the problem.

Ah, I see the difference.  After I added the internal address of my
personal site to the in-house DNS, that now works, but the client site
is still accessed using its outside address.  Now I shall try the
other poster's suggestion.
