I haven't used wireless with pfSense. From what I've glanced at in the freebsd-questions mailing list, wireless with FreeBSD is very much a hit or miss situation. I'd definitely stick with an external access point. My company has a D-Link DAP-2660. It's not running through pfSense though. It has multiple SSID capability although we're not using it. You can configure each SSID to a VLAN.
