Peter,

Gramma's bday was more like a family reunion... it was nice. It turns out,
all that work I put into the IRT packet.... several other students didn't
even turn in or do it before they got here. So I didn't feel as bad for
sending it in past the deadline. I haven't received any of it back yet...

So it's getting more and more intense as we progress.... It's the beginning
of the second week. We have a paper due tomorrow and one due on Friday.
We've read Gramsci, Hall, Foucault... and many others... people whose names
have been thrown about but I've never really read... so it's exciting. =)
We have four readings a night.... and most of it is social theory... classes
are from 8AM - 4-5PM... and then it's dinner and homework all night.... We
also have classes on Saturday mornings!... I don't think I've ever studied
so hard in my life... which is AMAZING. I love it! no competition but
encouragement of growth for all of us... the faculty are all really
dedicated and all amazing people. They really, genuinely want us to succeed
in grad school and are making sure all our flaws are improved before we
leave this place. I've already started talking in class more... trying to
find that critical voice in the classroom... learning skills for effective
class discussion facilitations. And learning so much about graduate school.
It's becoming more of a clear dream for me... starting to feel like it IS a
part of what I am going to do.

I am working on a paper ... using Althusser's theory of ideology to analyze
a personal narrative by Luther Standing Bear on his experiences at a
white-initiated school for Native American youth. I hope it'll turn out
okay.

I see all the exciting things you all are doing in the seminar! How I miss
it so! Semd everyone my hello's.

Hope you are well,

Gao Nue Xiong

nervous, but I also know you'll do well!! Please keep in touch.
