*Imperialisms Effect on Third World culture/Culture*

/"The darker world contributed greatly to the development of Europe, and based on this evidence, it is clear that the invisible hand is white" pg. 68/

   * _North South Gap:_ The power differential (economic, cultural)
     created by colonialism, globalization, and capitalism between
states in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. * _Traditionalism_
         o Imperialist views:__
               + The 3^rd world wills themselves into poverty because
                 they don't have the culture to support capitalism.
                 (Weber)__
               + The 3^rd world needs to change their culture in order
                 to be economically prosperous. __
               + However, the Imperialist nations willed the 3^rd world
                 into poverty.__
   * _Unilineal Evolution and "Preach the Unreached"_
         o "Economists in the United States and Europe...saw the
           development economists and the leaders of the Third World as
           'irresponsible wild men, radical utopians who could at most
           be entrusted with minor extensions" pg. 64. __
   * _International Nationalism_  the 3^rd world's nationalism:__
         o "An overarching unity (a national identity) would supersede
(but not subvert) the other social identities. Identification with the n national project could be more
           important than a sedimented identity than one inherited.
           There was an unrecognized problem within this otherwise
           valuable liberal project, it has a majoritarian cast. *It is
           easy for the demographic majority in a society to ask for
           the suspension of identity who's cultural features would
           anyway seep into the culture of the nation"* pg. 86__
   * _Questions:_

  1. How is the 3^rd world concept of "international nationalism"
     related to Macalester's concept of "global citizenship"?
  2. In the "post-colonial" present, there has been a new development
     in the creation of the 2^nd world (the third world lifted up by
     the bootstraps and post-soviet reform). Where does this new
     "world" fit into dichotomist theories based on the "juxtaposed but
     not harmonized" 1^st and 3^rd world spaces?
  3. How do we (as students of color or marginalized peoples or not)
     fit into the imperialist framework? Do we have an obligation of
     self-sacrifice to take accountability for the benefits we reap at
the cost of others?
